Observation over 35+ years of observing the Buddhist world is that men are more likely to be taken in by phony promises of purification than women. What can we learn from this? Genuinely curious.
This view of purification being a red-herring is something I've heard before but in fairly different terms. Along the lines of 'well it could be presented as a method for some students, but what really matters is to see the completeness of all experience'. Something like kadak.

Sometimes I like to firewall & narrowly define the 3 trainings. Morality training (sila) is necessary to a life well-lived. Mental skills development (samadhi) is useful. Awakeness-in-a-moment (pañña) is its own precious thing & hasn't much to do with the other two.
