Pluralising like that also shifts away from perennial type thought which might assert Buddhism - or any human made religious tradition - is at core the same absolute truth or essence. These are human traditions w/ different contexts & practices. We're lost if we forget that.

I was recently told by a lay Taiwanese Chan Buddhist that Tibetan Buddhism is bad because of their different, therefore *morally wrong*, attitudes toward vegetarianism, celibacy and alcohol.

She was missing of course completely the point that in Tibetan Buddhism people can have very different types of practice commitments depending on their lineage and style of practice with both monastic or non-monastic formal ordinations.

Not so much an example of perennialism, but of assuming that all of the Buddhim should be the same.

Good distinction here Joogipupu. I should have been clearer so as to not get perennialism mixed up with the sort of thing you're talking about here; assuming all of Buddhism - or any particular type of 'ism' - should be the same, which is a different move, you're right.

Sorry I was just commenting on stuff that came up when skimming through twitter in metro morning commute - without really reading the original thread. Excuse me for any confusion I might have added, and I will see myself out of this conversation ->. Have a good day/night!

No need to apologise :) We sort of ended up going on a tangent from Lesang's post on Nietzsche. Your reply was entirely appropriate to the discussion of pluralising the term Buddhism/s....which arose out of the use of Buddhism as a monolithic tradition (an understandable error)
