Surprise, Sakyong Mipham abused students. I warned @ethannichtern about this a while back and his response was to block me. This is why this shit keeps happening.https://thinkprogress.org/buddhist-leader-sexually-assaulted-students-report-finds-0d08e17cedd9/ …

Is
@ethannichtern perhaps one who tried covering up the crimes thereby creating potential for more victims? Or is he lower on the ladder?2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -
From my experience with
@shambhala every teacher, senior or not, is complicit in covering up these crimes. You don't get to become a teacher without drinking the kool-aid, so to speak. And the senior teachers are the ones handing out the cups.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -
I did notice Ethan has +11k followers but saw no mention in his feed of what happened. That's complicity

Looks like he’s since made his statement. It sounds like a good start. A rough road ahead for the community members but deep changes always gonna have that quality.http://www.ethannichtern.com/reflections-on-shambhala/ …

Trying to coerce people away from "hitting the exits" is some serious bullshit, manipulating students at their weak point - the social drive to belong to something 'special'. This is just using the dharma to draw people together socially, in a rotten mega-church. Yuck.

To Ethan: the latest Buddhist Project Sunshine Report is exemplary not just in exposing the abuse and cover-up, but suggesting models of how the community could respond. Worth linking directly to that since these are the voices you say you wish heard right now?

Ethan is a friend and was my first Buddhist teacher. Though I am not a part of either of his sanghas anymore, I am eager to hear about the outcome of the Shambhala NYC community meeting last night.

feels somehow antithetical to dharma’s comfort with impermanence to continue to maintain the organization despite the Regent and the Sakyong’s abuses. My question is who is at risk if the infrastructure fails? Are the people at risk the one’s upholding the necessity of the sangha

That’s a very good question to be asking.

The original sangha is somewhat split in the first place. Many of the OG Trungpa students don’t necessarily practice with the Sakyong. Boulder is an interesting case and I have access to many of the original students. I’m just dumbfounded at the survival of this org....

A lot of spin-off sanghas over the last several years, right? Some big ones like Dharma Ocean, quite a few tiny ones. New models: teacher-by-invitation, peer-led practice groups, rimé (non-sectarian) vajrayana groups. Probably many others I’m not aware of.
