For anyone under the impression that sadness - or any state of mind - isn't ok: 1 - actually notice the emotional flavour in your body 2 - get interested in the flavours, textures, changes 3 - notice the impulse to repress or enact 4 - remember that any state of mind is workable

This is the basic advice that changed my cognitive frame around emotion in general. Being told that absolutely any state of mind is fundamentally workable, had a tremendous impact on my life at the time. I thought I'd share that, in case it helps someone, somewhere, sometime

I post this also because I had a conversation with someone about Anthony Bourdain and what I'm calling psycho-social reflexivity, yesterday. It occurred to me that part of the reason people kill themselves isn't just the pain itself, or the believing the thoughts about it....

It's also that many people think suicidal ideation shouldn't be allowed in the space of experience. They feel shame for feeling psychological pain. This is partly why calling people like Bourdain cowards, can do so much harm. It's idiotic. Stop doing that.

Been thinking a lot lately about how much I cherish genuine sadness and this nails it!

That's interesting phrase. I wonder, what do you mean by genuine sadness? Wishing you the best in your practice - it sounds like you've got quite a lot of stuff up in the air after the recent shambhala revelations. May this frictious chaos give way to openness & resilience

One might say: There’s an epistemic import to most feelings, including feelings like sadness, which we are often trained to avoid or treat only negatively.

Hey you’re good at this!...you should do a PhD or something
I’m a lousy philosopher but the moment I started to reply I noticed that there are several distinctions/assumptions to be looked at. The epistemic value of emotion is a tricky one eh.
Could you say more?

Nah man, being a sad sack never works. Push the sadness deep down inside and keep it alfa.
