Bees are the absolute masters of the hexagon shape in nature, and visualizing bee-related data was the first thing that came to mind. I also tried to make the hexagons look like a honeycomb with the selection of color palette, and with adding some space between the hexagons.

The number of bee colonies has been rapidly declining in the last 15 years, which is often described as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). It is still not known what causes CCD, but likely causes include parasites, chemical pollution, habitat destruction, and overexploitation.

The rate of loss is still increasing, and a record number of honeybee colony loss has been reported in the recent period. Losing our bees can have severe impacts on ecosystem functioning, and will cause large economic losses.https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/07/05/last-winter-saw-highest-honeybee-colony-losses-record/ …

There is much more that could be written on this issue, and on the specific drivers of bee declines and CCD. Since this is a mapping challenge, I will not go into more detail, but a good place to start learning more about this is the CCD wiki article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_collapse_disorder …
