I took my Les Paul to a luthier for a pro setup a few months ago, and he spent 15 minutes eulogising to me about how they're the greatest guitars in the world.

They've been bought and sold before, I doubt things will change too much for the average player. Though it will be interesting to see if Epiphone are kept together with Gibson in a potential sale.

The guitar side of their business was still profitable or near profitable (for all its problems), so maybe that gets scooped up. It was everything else that was bleeding them dry. Their ultimate issue was poor management.
-
And they doubled down by blaming everything else. Cast doubt on demographics and the market, which doesn't make sense because Fender has been doing alright since they stepped back from Guitar Center a bit.

So. Should I get one now before they go? Always wanted to learn electric guitar. My aim one day is to be able to do “London Town”

Pretty bummed too. Been Rocking Gibson's for 20+ years.

Yeah I can see them being really suitable for your sound. They make such a great wall of rock \m/

If they can rebound from this, then hopefully they can work on improving some of their management. Would suck for a big name like this to go away.

As for the sound there are some very good Gibson "Copies" out there. Duesenberg for example: https://www.duesenberg.de/en/guitars/59er

It wasn't the guitar making that was making a loss it was a number of sub companies owned by Gibson that did them in. Along with the owner wanting to turn them into a luxury brand. Also the robot tuners didn't help.
