Heh... I always considered 'The luck of the Irish' to be an odd saying. This pretty much demonstrates why http://i.imgur.com/il4cqz9.png

Which is so fitting, on so many levels. "Oh, where are these new guys from? Ireland? The Irish must be lucky, then, since they live in the U.S. o' motherfuckin' A now! :D"

Well I don't walk around in lederhosen all day and have sauerkraut for breakfast, lunch and supper. Stereotypes are lovely.

As someone with a bit of Irish in them and having gone to public school for a time here in america yes it gets used a lot. That and for some stupid reason thinking I had a kilt. -_-

Maybe that's why they say it - they don't know enough actual history to know how terrible that "luck" is.

I've never met anyone in ireland that says "top of the morning to ya" ever. Do they say it in the south maybe?

I dunno, I'm in the UK and have been using that coloquialism along with the other (and the more than likely classed as offensive one nowadays) "You did that a bit Irish didn't ya?" For a good 30 years or so.

Apparently, it's not about people in Ireland but rather Irish miners in the US. That could explain why you only hear Americans say it. http://mentalfloss.com/article/30236/luck-irish-old-mining-expression …

I think it’s because America tends to think of Ireland as basically leprechauns running around in a field of four leaf clovers...?
