I did this once with my own song and it wasn't until a friend pointed out that they both sound very similar that I noticed.
I released a song where a major part of it was almost identical to a really popular similar song and it still hurts :(

Dude, truth. Our band found out one of the guitar parts on our latest album matches up almost PERFECTLY with a big name album released just a few months after. We got to it first, but still, if we had delayed release... yeeesh, could've looked bad.
