Sometimes it's easy to get lost in tweaking techincal mix stuff & you forget to think 'How does this FEEL? Does it FEEL good on your ears?' Cos at the end of the day that's the most important thing. A good song, well performed, will often transcend an average quality mix

That's what I liked about Sabatons 'The lost Battalion', which is a song about a battalion of soldiers getting lost in the Argonne during the First World War. What Sabaton did was record shots of recreations the guns used in the battle and replaced the drums with them.

Depends on the genre, of course. In hip hop a good producer like Kanye or J Dilla will make an album what it is. And then punk or metal will sound pretty bad when overproduced.

I've learned that a good bass tone and a good kick drum will carry even the absolute worst of mixes, particularly in rock and metal. You can get by with a guitar that sounds a swarm of Metal Zones in a tin can as long as your low end is good.
