Horror games are often better when they don't explain all their strangeness & metaphors. eg: Silent Hill is always terrifying due to the sense of the unknown, but how many games immediately lose their fear factor when we find out it's a cult, secret lab, nightmare etc etc

(and yeah I know Silent Hill had a cult but it's barely a theme in SH2 which focuses much more on the lead character's internal psycho-sexual fears & flaws)

Reminds me of outlast. Up until the elevator ride down to the last area irs creepy and intimidating. The last area proper ruins everything the game was building to and leaves off on a terrible note.
