Horror games are often better when they don't explain all their strangeness & metaphors. eg: Silent Hill is always terrifying due to the sense of the unknown, but how many games immediately lose their fear factor when we find out it's a cult, secret lab, nightmare etc etc

Just thinking about how part one used the environment and the it’s last level in the basement is was how one game reviewer wrote “it’s like the end of Silence of the Lambs but with more pyschos” terrifying. And ends with barely any idea of what’s happening. Damn love that game!
