Kinda depends where you are. If you're an established act with tons of fans, regular tour schedule, etc, you'd be better off giving them what they want, and if you don't want to do that anymore, just quit. But that ain't your model.

i.e. if Slayer starts playing pop music tomorrow, they may as well pack it in or stop calling themselves Slayer, because that isn't what the people who pay their rent want to hear.
-
Nah they can make whatever music they want to make under whatever name they like. It's THEIR music. If people don't like it then they don't have to buy it or listen to it.

Music is art and so the artist is the person to decide what the next masterpiece is going to be. Who else is in charge of keeping up the motivation through art if not the artist himself/herself? That be said, I can only agree with Gav :)

The line is how much participation the audience has, maybe? Listening to music is rather passive, while video games are interactive.

That's a good point. Also, games are generally made by many ppl w/explicit goal of creating something that will pay everyone's salary. Seldom an undiluted expression of one person's creative vision

But you're not the likes of EA, Activision and Ubisoft pumping out focus-tested tripe. If they took a page from your book they'd likely end up with more interesting/varied IPs
