In simplest terms: Digital audio can only handle a certain limit of loudness. When every moment is at that peak, nothing is relatively loud

Or, in simpler terms: A rollercoaster with no dips & valleys, just height - would be boring & flat - music works on the same principle :)

I remember when learning mastering, how important it is to keep most of everything at -3 so when there's something loud it is loud.

Yeah, these days I'm finding managing most of it in the mix stage helps a lot so I can keep the limiter at -4, -5 max
