My problem with Fallout 4 was that I was kept on the west side of the map too much. That made it feel smaller to me.

For me it's because there's much more to discover and the discoveries are a lot more varied. It's why NV felt so small too.

Always enjoyed new Vegas & 2 where natural terrain made it a more natural linear exp. 4 and 3 tend to be less focussed IMO.

could it be because a lot to get places in F3 you can't simply walk straight there, have to take a detour or two

I think it'd be accurate to say 4's map was more populated, which made it feel less like a wasteland but more interesting

The walking speed might affect that. Also in Fallout 3 it's not that often that you would go from corner to corner.

I think speed of traversal is a factor too. No sprint button or vertibirds in Fallout 3.
