When I am president I will pass a law which states that open world games must let you keep playing after the ending

True in some instances, but I'd also argue that sometimes, if a game lets you continue playing around in the overworld, it can kind of cheapen the ending and rob it of any sense of finality.

hopefully cyberpunk will expand on the endings sort of like the fallout 3 dlc, but yeah - was pretty bummed that i couldn't continue from the final cutscene

I agree but I discussed this with devs and one worry is that it can lock you into a narrative. Don't want to spoil it but some games the main dies

Yeah, personally I think having endings like that always make further exploration & character levelling feel hollow and pointless after seeing the end

I think Zelda kinda gets a pass with this. It's just how their stories go, and without coming up with some bullshit excuse for why the bad guys are still roaming around, or just having the world be the same as before the ending, even if it doesn't make sense.

BOTW barely has a story anyway so it works a bit better there. The 'main story' of that game, to me, is the player's journey exploring the world

Enderal, one of my favourite open-world games ever doesn't let you play after finishing it and it would be some much worse if it did. Why shouldn't open world games be allowed to end for good? The emotional impact of the end can be so much higher if you once had infinite freedom.

Biggest downside to new Vegas is the unsubtle “would you like to reload your last save before the finale?” That comes after completion
