You know, I always figured all elec guitars sounded the same, since you're not concerned with the acoustics of the body at all. If one brand sounds superior to all others, why pick any other? No pun intended.

Short version? There are countless variables that can shape the sound of an electric guitar so there’s a lot of room for personal preference. That said, Strats, Les Pauls, etc are classics for a reason.

It's all in the pickup, no? The electric components? What's to stop Ibanez from just copying what the others do?

That's a big part of it, but there's also the strings (what they're made of, how thick they are), the amp you play through, the specific settings on the guitar/amp, etc.

This! Also, wood matters. A massive slab of mahogany sounds different to anything else

But isn't that slab of mahogany simply serving as "host" to the strings and pickups and everything that actually makes the sound? I guess I'm stuck on how acoustic guitars truly depend on their bodies for their sound.

It is, but it sounds fundamentally different to a different piece of wood regardless of strings etc

I.e The strings resonate differently through different shapes and types of wood

So this is really more than just an aesthetic choice.pic.twitter.com/BKRdxzsJFN

Haven't played either of those but I can almost guarantee they sound different to a Strat or Les Paul
