I need to see the ending first, but there's one plot point that I have trouble parsing. A character makes this enormous, life-altering decision, but never really gives their reasons for doing so. Changes the whole course of the plot and their personal arc, but why? Zero buildup.

Assuming I'm guessing right, it's cause she felt guilty about what she did to Joel and she was trying to find some bit of redemption through Lev.

That crossed my mind, and it's as good an interpretation as any. But (man, I really don't want to share any spoilers on social media, but it's hard) her assignment was basically "find this guy," and she took it to mean "right, turn my entire life upside-down, got it."

The actions she takes against former friends and allies feels really weird there too
