Game music fans, out of curiosity how much does having a connection to the game itself factor into your appreciation of its music? For example I know plenty of film music fans that listen to film music without having seen or without caring for the film it is from.

150% agree. Consider the opening chords of Mass Effect 1's start screen, or the piano line from Lord Gwyn's fight in Dark Souls, literally anything Jeremy Soule has written for games (Baldur's Gate, Elder Scrolls). In a narrative driven game, music is PRIMO for me.

My mistake, Jeremy Soule didn't do Baldur's Gate. Both are still awesome!

Strong agree. I'm pretty sure Halo 3: ODST's soundtrack really helped sell me on the changed tone and atmosphere; Doom's(2016) soundtrack gave me this feeling of sheer thundering, grinding brutality; and any time I hear the Fallout 3 theme, I feel a mix of nostalgia and wonder.

100% agree with Gav, if I don't know what game the track is from, or what it is inspired by in your case, I generally won't get the messages and references within it, or pull up memories of how I felt going through certain parts of the games. I need that stuff when I'm in VGland.
