Yeah for a game that's all about looting stuff and looking awesome, all the awesome-looking loot is outside of the gameplay loop. 
Personal preference I guess. Other than 1 or 2 skins for exotics, I'm happy with the in game skins for everything
And lets not pretend the money is going to the developers anyway, it's lining the big ceo's pockets and if it isn't, sell the game dearer? If you're worried about rent then maybe not sell the game for a single dollar?
Not to say i'm against cosmetic mtx, that's indeed the ideal model but a triple A dev doing it? To pay rent? Really?
The broad industry move to F2P has done more for accessibility & combating "wealth inequality" (by offering zero cost entry fees) than a bunch of silly hats & coats have harmed it. Well designed F2P is making gaming accessible to more people, in more places.

Perhaps, for a subset of those playing for whom the costumes are the point. If there were a significant number of those players surely Bungie would stop building things to do and just build things to wear and Destiny Project Runway DLC.
