You wouldn't miss the entire game. The game's thematic core is all about building connections between people and you do this as part of the story with the characters and places within the game world. It just uses multiplayer mechanics as a way of further reinforcing its theme.

It kind of is in that it's what the game uses to prove its point. It doesn't change any of the cutscenes or anything like that but the game can be a real slog without the help you get from other people's stuff which the game uses its early chapters to demonstrate
