Obviously the challenge is an integral part of their vision - but there is so much more to love & enjoy about their games than just that. My favorite, most memorable times in Dark Souls, Bloodborne & Sekiro were just quietly wandering those gorgeous worlds, finding hidden things.

Add-on to that difficulty is relative. I don't find the soals games all that hard, did From fail? An easier mode also doesn't equal zero struggle.

Indeed. My mum plays 'Tomb Raider' and she's not very good at it; Easy Mode is just right for her.

From what I gather of the discourse, 'artistic vision' is only a surface level justification. I think a lot of ppl have tied their self worth to the ability to 'git gud' and beat hard games. The easier modes, in their eyes invalidates that, and their self worth. It's gatekeeping

One of my friends said this: "Finishing FROM games fully is something I'm proud of specifically because I know not everyone does. Even the "pro" players. if everyone can do it, then it loses that."

The challenge, to me, is a very surface part. Like, it draws you in, but then all the hooks for the environment, the world building and story, will keep you coming back, and where the From magic really resonates.

I think it's partly From's fault though. They market so heavily on how difficult their games are ("prepare to die!") That people have seem to think that it's the only important thing. I DO wonder if it would have done as well without the difficulty attachment though.

I think I would have loved them anyway without the difficulty, but I also wonder whether I'd have heard of them without it. It was pretty niche when DS1 came out

Watching a let’s play is nowhere near the same thing as exploring and interacting with a world yourself. I’d rather play an easier version of a game my own way, then watch someone else play it their way. (Let’s plays are still entertaining in their own way)

By far the best part of the souls games imo is the way that they can tell a compelling story through their visual and sound design. The most memorable part of Dark Souls 3 for me was Soul of Cinder's 2nd phase and the way the music reacted to what was happening
