I find the timers in games like clash of clans to be far, far more exploitative. I don’t have any data to back this up (does anybody) but the stories I’ve heard about ‘whales’ in games like overwatch tend to be isolated but the coc stories are widespread and frankly distressing

I never ran into a kid in a game with lootboxes who wasn't BADLY addicted to them. There are reasons you have to be 21 to enter a casino, and it's not just because they serve alcohol.
