One of the biggest lies the right tells people, is that progressives or leftists will "brand" people as racist or sexist, etc. That we're not describing behaviour, but giving out proverbial scarlet letters. It's often very deliberate language that implies a sense of permanency.

It's effective rhetoric because if someone believes they'll never be accepted if they change or grow as a person, it leads them to double down on reactionaries beliefs they may hold. After all, what's the point in positive change if you've already been "branded"?

I think 'cancel culture' often does have an element of permanence to it. Seen it happen to lots of left leaning folks, even after they make efforts to work on themselves they'll always be 'person who said dumb edgy thing 5 years ago' or whatever

There might be a few people who 'cancel' people for life but most people who make an effort to do better tend to be forgiven for saying something problematic or doing something shitty. I know most of us are willing to give people a chance, the people that don't are just louder.

Yep. It's unfortunate that the unforgiving, conflict-sustaining constants tend to be the ones that stick the easiest to the psyche, reactive mind and memory.
