I've said it before and I'll say it again - I have never seen any movie do to a country what THE PASSION did to ours. https://www.avclub.com/the-passion-of-the-christ-was-the-blunt-force-weapon-ev-1832999651 …

I HAAATE this film aka 'the Jesus Snuff Movie.' Jesus isn't introduced as a chr you care about or feel empathy for- it's straight into the snuff porn. & YIKES! the antisemitism. Zefferelli's Jesus of Nazareth may be whitewashed, but Robert Powell's Jesus is a bravura performance.

I watched it without any religious context while a Christian raised friend explained the more biblical-specific moments in real time. Only takeaway I had was that it was incredibly violent but not in a way that really made me feel anything. That felt wrong somehow.

Park Chan-Wook is an amazing director. His movies are all violent, but it's never pointless violence.

I went to see it in theaters, and there was a little kid sitting next to me. That poor kid was traumatized by the time he got out, and his parents thought it was 'ok' because he needed to see what Jesus went through 'for us'. I never wanted to punch people so badly.

I remember seeing it once years ago and wondering what the fuss was all about. But I watched it when it was playing on live TV in Australia, so I soon realised they must have heavily edited it to remove the worst parts.

What surprises me is how Christians act like the crucifixion of Jesus was something special. The Romans crucified people all the damn time; supposedly 6000 after the Third hird Servile War . Christians think it was the most important thing ever. For the Romans, it was Tuesday.

I actually remember seeing that when I was in school. Oligatory watch. It's a boring slow gory mess of a movie.
