The fact that people see it as such a “taboo” subject makes everyone on youtube suddenly an expert in mixing and production when none of us have ever actually denied using it. It’s just not something I feel I should disclose for every song?https://twitter.com/GeorgeYonge/status/1098896718647697408 …

I hate how much people have latched onto the catch all “auto tune is bad” when most of the time they just had production and pitching and are clueless

I don’t even think a disclaimer for every song would work. I swear some people think compression and reverb is “auto tune.” Even if there’s none, you’d still get accused of it. It’s a losing battle.

I don't use tuning. My attitude to it is, the human voice isn't perfect so why make it perfect? The little flaws & idiosyncrasies in our voices are part of them. Compression etc help compliment those but for me it loses some of the soul when it's automated onto a straight line.

It’s not always automated “onto a straight line”. Melodyne, Antares, Waves Tune etc all allow you to do much more than just tune and even the tuning is way more deep than putting every note in perfect pitch.

It depends on the sound you're going for. Now a days even metalcore bands tune EVERYTHING. On major label releases the bass line will get Melodyned. When your target audience grows to expect a type of sound, it's counterproductive to fight the trend for most artists.

Exactly. The more I learn about engineering the more I respect/geek out over each genre and how they’re mixed. Tuning is hard to master, but can sound awesome. I think it’s dope that some artists don’t use it too, definetely brings an organic sound to the table.

There's a difference between LMFAO using it and Adele. It just depends on the intent. To me it's like any other effect, reverb, delay, etc. Can be transparent or can be insane.

And I think something that people forget which is utmost key... melodyne / pitch correction don’t magically give you talent. You need to be able to actually sing and understand vocal characteristics in order to use it without sounding like tpain.

IMO it often ruins (to my ears) performances that were great before it. When it's transparent it can kill a great vocal

I suppose it's all subjective and what elements go into your definition of a great vocal. I like both, and sometimes I intentionally avoid and sometimes I use the shit out of it. Live and let Dyne...pic.twitter.com/dAy0F9cnCj

No judgement towards people who like it, just personally don't like how it sounds (in any genre) Maybe I'm an old luddite 😁
