the auto equipping of weapons i don't want or don't use at all still annoys me greatly though wish we were able get rid of the unwanted weapons.

I think it slows things down and forces you to appreciate the world. Sometimes with Assassin's Creed's climbing mechanics one can feel tempted to b-line to objectives. My childhood of rented videogames forced me to power through them, so it's nice when I'm made to take my time.
