It's definitely a difficult debate, as the response to the New York Times article just proved. Especially when nobody is thinking outside the box, at the moment. Because Sex & Gender are two different things, so legal documents could add both. Like on a birth certificate...

Complicated. Take cancer, for example. M2F transsexuals have a reduced risk of prostate cancer, but an increased risk of breast cancer. So, that's a medical need tied to gender.

Again, complicated. Your biological sex can't be changed. Your sex-organs can be altered through plastic surgery, and HRT can give you secondary characteristics of your preferred gender. But that's it.

Scientifically, it is a yes or no street. And it should be. Because Gender Dysphoria is a disconnect between your sex & gender, it can be classified as a mental disorder. Meaning, it helps people pay for GRS and counseling through their insurance. Stuff like that.
