You don't need to 'grind' in the traditional sense unless you want to rush through the story.
There are more than enough unique side missions to get levelled up. It's a slow-burn, very long game for sure - but isn't that the same as almost every RPG?

As an avid MMO player who has seen the dark side of grind. I see grind used more and more to describe what is essentially just 'non-story' missions. Which is so far off the mark. Flow is certainly sometimes an issue with side content feeding progression but grind is rarely true

Ive heard the problem with this one is that to sell their micro transactions they put way too much emphasis on necessary completion of side missions to keep up with story content leveling. Side missions are great, but only if you want to do them. 1/2

I've played plenty of RPGs where side missions are nigh-on essential if you wanna have a chance of finishing the story (Divinity 2 comes to mind)

I think thats where Kal's comment comes into play, the fact that they have micro transactions as an alternative makes it so that people cant help but wonder if it was a design choice, or they implemented the grind on purpose to milk their consumers a bit more.
