You don't need to 'grind' in the traditional sense unless you want to rush through the story.
There are more than enough unique side missions to get levelled up. It's a slow-burn, very long game for sure - but isn't that the same as almost every RPG?

I've played plenty of RPGs where side missions are nigh-on essential if you wanna have a chance of finishing the story (Divinity 2 comes to mind)

I think thats where Kal's comment comes into play, the fact that they have micro transactions as an alternative makes it so that people cant help but wonder if it was a design choice, or they implemented the grind on purpose to milk their consumers a bit more.
