In the age of streaming, what do labels actually do for the artist?

Pay for recording albums, pay for, setup and manage tours (a lot of work), etc. Basically the gruntwork so that artists can focus om making music and performing. A lot can be done by artists themselves, it's the question whether they want to so it themselves.
