# Fresh eyes are supremely hard to come by # Talks given by relatively junior folks tend to be more broadly interesting and accessible to the majority of attendees # Curiosity and enthusiasm grounded in practical experience are usually more interesting than expertise.

# Anybody who snarks about your material is an asshole. Fuck them. # Everyone should use their feet to find material that speaks to them. No hard feelings. # Feedback is valuable. But if your feedback comes down to *who they are* (more junior), that's not helpful. Skip it.

i have to disagree... not everyone is able to give good talks. i have more than 10y experience and there isn't a single presentation i would dare make ... this idea we are all gifted with presentation skills and ability to write engaging blog posts is divise and negative
-
I would never either think or say that. People who are gifted at or enjoy or want to improve at public speaking and/or writing... should do it. People who don't, shouldn't. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
agree, again I apologise if i misunderstood. my goal wasn't to say don't do it to someone that wants to do it. it was to say not everyone needs to do it, and not doing it does not make you a lesser professional, again, it's clear i misunderstood and that was not what you implied
-
in my last 2 positions i was in places that literally had in my career framework the need for public speaking and to blog. I had enough experience to ignore it... I'm not sure even more junior people than me had. but this was not your point and i accept i made a wrong comment

I’m new to tech but not a kid, lots of speaking experience from prev life but struggling to come up with topics. How does one get good topics when ya feel like ya don’t know the questions much less the answers?
-
Starter questions: What's something you figured out that was hard or just really interesting? Can you sum up something that took you months to learn? What's the last thing you explained to someone else in depth? And who is your audience?
-
Thank you, this is a great start

Today, I was actually told to butt out of something because of my comparative lack of experience. It would have bugged me the whole of today, but bc I read your tweet yesterday, I was much less affected. Tysm!
-
I'm really sorry to hear that. Good on you for carrying on with aplomb. Fuck the haters.

There is a stage where everything either seems obvious (for everyone) or not broad enough as a topic for a talk. Trying to figure out how to get out of there.

-
When in doubt, tie it to a specific story. Consider the dif between “best practices are: peg your fd limits to 32k” and “let me tell you about this wacky bug we finally traced back to running out of fd’s and these other lessons...". Narrative knits and adds scope.
-
Thanks. I'll give this a try. :)

"The best way to learn is to teach" (can't remember the actual quote, but I think it comes Latin)... After doing my first talk, I knoe feel I know the subject more. Challenging questions made me research. The support I've got from people giving my ideas to add to it is amazing
-
for sure. the shit i've talked about, i know cold even years later. everything else is gone like so much dust.
