its just bad budgeting and talking to someone who doesnt actually pay the bills

it's bad headcount management. either they have enough high impact work on core product work and differentiators, or they should hire fewer people. but people jsut never really think clearly about this. it's endemic.

It took a long time but eventually tracked infra vs product hrs at a prior workplace. Definitely helped attract some short-term spending to get us off infra that was holding us back.

This is one reason the GM model can sometimes make better decisions than deep functional orgs: as a single threaded service owner, I see/am accountable for every dollar, so I'm incented to optimize headcount against infra against marketing against everything else.

General Manager, I assume, with a more balanced empowerment/accountability setup than "deep functional" orgs where that's not necessarily the case (and leads to strange decisions that aren't the best for a product/service/whatever).

People are fungible, internal tech less so, and external tech even less. A trifecta is adoption of policy/procedure/arch that educates staff, drives internal tech innovation and easily integrates with bic external tech.
