I think that a life spent studying something, no matter how niche or obscure it might be, is probably better for the individual, for society, and even the planet than developing some new thing to market or produce.

“Racism has never been put in a critical context by the media. When it comes to fighting racism, the media are part of the problem. They perpetuate stereotypes. They lie by omission, distortion and selection. They give racists inflated importance and respectability”

NZ psyche coming to the fore in this story about "alleged" behaviour of NZ athletes. Amazing how it seamlessly turns into a story about Australian athletes.

Only in a country whose ruling class has grown deeply deluded could a space joy ride like Jeff Bezos’s be seen as cause for public celebration rather than the symptom of moral rot and institutional decay that it so clearly is. jacobinmag.com/2021/07/jeff-b

Tweeting this superb piece again with following notes:
1. Hard to miss how few of Russell Jackson's sports media colleagues retweeted such a great read.
2. Isn't it strange no other media followed up news an AFL club was harbouring a paedophile network?

Credit where it’s due. How is James Brayshaw not screaming abuse down his microphone while commentating this listless performance from the Roos? #AFLNorthDogs #afl
The lack of criticism by the commenters of this woeful North Melbourne team is staggering. Bradshaw’s understatement, “North have a lot of work to do” #AFLNorthDogs

When Steven Pinker insists the world is getting better and better, much of it's based on claims about declining global poverty. But a new report from the UN’s top poverty expert shows that global poverty has gone nearly unchanged over the last forty years.

It’s curious that we are addressed by the state, in the context of this Covid-19 crisis, just as Adorno and Horkheimer outlined all those years ago in Dialectic of Enlightenment. We are addressed only in two ways: as workers and consumers. #adorno

That a 'replica' Endeavour is still going to 're-create' a circumnavigation of Australia that Capt Cook never made, while the country locks down against a deadly pandemic is as absurd as a 30 minute haircut while maintaining 1.5 meters social distance.

Isn't it fascinating how, the same people who were until a few weeks ago saying there isn't enough money to invest in the green transition, suddenly divined trillions? Sure we must refloat the economy. But how about saving the planet immediately after the virus has been defeated?

Great piece by on the ideological distortions & silences that shape public discourse about race."This lack of “racial literacy” comes down 2 the fact that the dominant interpretations of racism..are very far removed from what race actually is"
