Never stop posting these "Quick tips", I learn every time you do and it gives me so many ideas to implement it in lots of ways. Basic gradient texture + cylindrical projection is deceptively simple but I would never have thought of it.

We use the same technique for all level elements in our game. We have one atlas with all the gradients, which is 256x256 (maybe 512x512). This also covers some of the player objects in our game, like buildable objects and trophies.
