Idealism captures the epistemic point that we can’t know what’s outside our consciousness. We only perceive things through consc. This is similar to Russellianism’s ”intrinsics” but reformulated as observer-independence. Sort of categorical ignorance, which explains the ep. gap.

I'm not sure we've moved on from berkeleyan idealism and Johnson's appeal to the stone. Just with better maths.

Berkeley's idealism was subjective, i.e. "there is nothing but perception". In objective idealism perceptions are of transpersonal mental states. Johnson's stone was in Mind, as was his foot, his nervous system, and his pain experience. His refutation was in his imagination ;)

Does idealism mean a commitment to mind? Or is it essentially just a more flexible substance than matter? Effectively, it’s whatever we experience, without some sort of duality between mind-matter, internal-external, primary-secondary, etc?

I like those pluralism papers by
@timvangelder. They remind me of Hubert Dreyfus’s claim that there is no psychological level – no level between the neural and the social. I.e. all, at least, folk psychological concepts are social concepts. - Još 2 druga odgovora

Reading materials science news daily shows that some "unimaginable" phenomena of matter is found that is surprising - something that wouldn't happen if all there is is consciousness. So it's more likely that all is matter, and consciousness/imagination is a material phenomenon.
