There is no comfort in this. I don't know anyone who is middle class who doesn't worry that they are one medical catastrophe or job loss away from being destitute.

The way the American middle class has been strip-mined of its wealth and spending power is a wonder, not the good kind. And/but I am beginning to wonder how much of that was essentially a wealth transfer to the developing world.

Yes but in the US it's the opposite. The number of people in the middle class is collapsing. Assuming you use honest statistics, which many economists refuse to do. Outsourcing: drain wealth from US middle class to grow middle class elsewhere.

Seems like it has done a better job of increasing the wealth of the investor classes in USA and 1st world than middle class elsewhere.

No, for the first time ever. Agriculture-based civilization allowed for more sustained poverty, but only because the poor stopped dying from seasonal/temporal hunger. No one was protected in a pre-civilization society.

Kind of seems to be moving the goalposts on what constitutes middle class, but it still generally seems like good news.

Your back is definitely against the wall when you have to define something that could even vary within a province, and then apply it to the world, but I think you’re right — the trend is positive.
