the keyboard shortcut for Archive is cumbersome (Shift + Command + A). Something simpler as pressing A for Archive will make it a breeze going through the inbox

One option is to use the Delete key. When you press it, you’ll be prompted if you want the key to Trash or Archive.

If you set it to Archive, you can still trash via ⌘⌫

that works. However, pressing the Delete key to archive feels odd and dare I say, not right. Delete is not archive. The Gmail web view allows for custom keyboard shortcuts. I would prefer A for archive, D delete, R for reply, F for Forward...... why 1 key shortcuts are not used?

You may want to try switching to the Gmail keyboard shortcuts set in Preferences, on the General tab. This will enable you to press keys like ‘E’ for archive.
