thanks. just out of curiosity, is horizontal layout challenging to implement technically? Given that it's a common interface element in macOS (Finder, Mail, etc.) and 3rd party apps, I've assumed it would be relatively straightforward to code -- but I'm not a dev.

Yeah, column-based tables are a standard component. One tricky aspect is having to offer two parallel UI options – a lot of the standard/free tooling doesn't support that, and custom infrastructure for this can get tricky.
