I like Mimestream on macOS but I do need help on the question if I can have Mimestream running in the background telling me when new mail arrives, without it being open.

Hi Tim, Mimestream does have to be running in order to receive new message notifications. You can close the main window, though, and let the app run in the background – and you can set it to launch on startup too (just control-click the dock icon > Options). Hope that helps!
