There is a way to export a single message as a .eml file:
You can use the Message > View Raw Source menu item, and then use File > Save to export an email as .eml
But no way to do this in bulk, like exporting a full mbox file, and isn’t on our short-term roadmap.

To export all of your email from Gmail, you may be interested in looking at Google Takeout, which allows you to export an mbox of your entire account:
takeout.google.com
