#AppleMail keeps playing an incoming mail sound, even though I disabled it in the system preferences. Restarting didn't fix it. Does anyone have an idea?

Instead of System Preferences, have you taken a look at Mail's own preferences? On the General tab, there is a “New messages sound” option. Is that set to ‘None’?
