Constraints fuel creativity.

I loved this delightful book - and 's self-imposed constraint: Math Without Numbers.

I just received this new book, and at a glance, it looks terrific. Very creatively conceived, written, and illustrated. I came to that conclusion after reading two pages at random. Take a look at them below and see what you think:

Without using any numbers, wrote a book about the math behind multiple infinities, strange topologies, extra dimensions, and other fascinating and complex ideas that usually only make sense when scribbled in strange notations on a blackboard. omny.fm/shows/you-are-

RECOMMENDATION: Math Without Numbers by is a wonderful, fun exploration of many mathematical concepts, free of jargon and scary notation. Ideal for math-phobic people. Have already recommended it to parents of teens I know to help their kids expand their view of maths!

Believe and amplify Black women journalists. If this is happening to me (a white data nerd from Harvard) it's definitely happening to them 100x over.

I look forward to a data journalism that cares more about reporting the empirical reality of the world we live in, rather than some bizarre ideology of partisan neutrality.
Getting there will require (as says) multi-cultural newsrooms - from the top down.

Really grateful that is going public with this and naming names despite the risk. Her 2016 essay "The Call-to-Whiteness" is extremely clarifying and helped me understand what happens when Black journalists try to tell the truth.

And despite every historian, social scientist, and int'l election watchdog I interviewed telling me categorically that this is about stopping Black people from voting.

This despite me citing multiple academic studies showing that, yes, increase in Black & Hispanic voter turnout is the strongest predictor of new voting restrictions.

I just want to confirm that 's experience here is widespread - white editors squash stories about white supremacy.
In 2017 greenlit a 3000 word feature on voter suppression from me... and then cut it without giving any explanation twitter.com/farai/status/1

If you're a math geek, I highly recommend "Math Without Numbers" by (Milo Beckman). It's an insanely thought-provoking collection of lessons that both I and my 12-year-old love. This should be required reading for humans who fear integrals and "higher" math. (Yes, you.)

Congratulations Vietnam🇻🇳for crushing the curve AGAIN!
Vietnam, a country of ~100 million people has had a TOTAL of 35 COVID deaths.
Vietnam did it w/effective closures & lockdowns, high levels of masking, aggressive contact tracing, & clear risk communication to the public.

This paper looks at 64,000 theses & talks to show the link between status and jargon. Low status individuals use jargon, complex language & acronyms since they think it makes them sound more impressive. Also, the last paragraph is (hopefully intentional) genius. Via
