Last Nov I expressed the view that obstetric violence is violence against women. It happens to women 'because they are female'. The resulting pile on was horrific. I've finally decided to tell my story and shine a light on this misogynistic bullying.

Thanks everyone for all the support you are giving me. It means a great deal. I am fine 😀. Very important to call out threats and bullying but also to keep perspective that for every horrible message I've had thousands of lovely appreciative ones. ♥️

This is getting tiring. An organisation called is telling people not to buy my books and has also, it seems, bullied another organisation who put up a post supporting me, into taking it down.

If anyone can be a woman just by saying that they are, then the word woman becomes completely meaningless. And then spaces previously reserved for women become spaces for anyone who wishes to access them. Does that not strike you as at all problematic?

Saying women are male or female people who feel feminine is much less progressive than saying women are female and can have any type of personality, hobbies or interests.

Where do I define woman as baby making machine? I fight for women's rights in childbirth. Are women who fight against domestic violence defining women as wives?

That isn't what feminism is. Feminism is not a catch-all equality movement; it's specifically the liberation of women from the patriarchy.

Woman is a biological reality. Gender is the social construct and it is regressive and harmful. Stereotypes don’t make a women. Feelings don’t make a woman. Biology and adulthood makes a woman.

I've written a short piece on my substack about this rollercoaster week, with a few thoughts to ponder on what the implications of the phrase 'women and birthing people' might be.

Also, as I've said elsewhere, the bullying and attempts to silence women in the birth world is RIFE. I was made an example of. Others similarly. So many just keep their heads down because they don't want to lose their livelihood. 😞

I think the comparison is made with gay rights and many therefore feel it's 'just the same as the 80s'. They haven't thought through the ways this is different and impacts women's rights, indeed many have told me they 'don't have time' and we should just 'be kind' etc.

"Why all this matters, over and above the academic and philosophic arguments about what is to be a woman or a man, is that sex difference is key to formulating health and social policy." “The bond between mother and infant is crucial. You can’t protect it if you can’t name it.”

I think what is clear from this debate is that it is not OK to describe a trans person in any way other than the way they wish to be referred to, but if is totally fine to do that to women, who make up about half the population.

No- at most we need a definition in any relevant document/policy which clarifies that ‘women’ means female people and includes those who prefer gendered use of language for their personal descriptors.

“not everyone who menstruates is a woman,” you say? The issue is that language must reflect reality. 🤔 But you aren’t actually attempting to change language, you are attempting to change reality - or more precisely, the PERCEPTION of reality. That’s a problem, my friend.

From today's Telegraph. I'm so glad they included my key point that if you change language at population level and say not all people who give birth are women, you demote women from a sex to an identity. And the ramifications of that are huge.

Women have fought for decades to remove the shame around the language to describe their biology. It's because of their efforts that you can even call yourselves Vagina Museum. And now you're trying to frame the erasure of women and their words as progressive? Idiocy.
