It’s a spit guard. It’s commonplace for law enforcement to use when a detainee is spitting. It’s also entirely breathable.

I’m horrified but not surprised. Dehumanization of people that are clearly in a crisis situation will lead to their injury and death at the hands of law enforcement. They treated him like an animal. Poor poor man. RIP

If LE must attend those in an altered state, can they not "trank" people in such a state instead of brutalizing them further? My Jesus, I can't even.

Hypothetically they probably could, but I doubt tranquilizers are that safe since you’d have to take into consideration weight and BMI (I assume) to determine the proper dosage. I’m sure there’s better ways, but that might not be it.
