Finished up that tale at around 1700 words, but that's without the explainer on how data gets from a rover back to Earth. Still need to fact check a few things like sol numbers, DSN stations, etc. Not sure I like how it came out, but definitely good to have it written down.

Engineering documentation pro-tip: make sure all figures in a document are in a vector format, especially if they contain small text. That way when readers zoom into read labels in the figure, the labels are actually readable. Same goes for a table inserted as an image.

Picard management tip: The respect you show your crew is a major factor in determining how they feel about their work.

It also is a good tale to explain how data gets from a rover to the science team and why the Deep Space Network is amazing.

Last night started work on another MER Tale. This one about my first role on MER and the time I got at 5AM phonecall from Steve Squyres wondering why there was no data from Spirit and the hunt to find the data.

On this day in 2004, Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Spirit landed on Mars in Gusev crater. Spirit far exceeded its 90-day lifespan, operating on the Red Planet for six years:

And get's credit for the title of that story based on his summary of the attempted 2008 MER budget cut.

Wrapped up my first draft of "Give Us the Money or the Cute Little Rover Gets It" at 2,100 words. I had forgotten how fast that whole budget cut that wasn't situation went down. I'm now at just over 22,000 words across various MER tales.

Since nature abhors a vacuum, and I'm on leave from grad school, I've decided to pick back up on writing down some more MER Tales. Getting started with the story of "Give Us the Money or the Cute Little Rover Gets It" about the time the MER budget was almost slashed 40%.

Screen shot of a word processor with the file title of "Give Us the Money or the Cute Little Rover Gets It" and showing body text reading "Two months after Spirit parked at Winter Haven III on the north edge of Home Plate and was thought to be safe for the winter, a new threat to the rover emerged. Unlike previous existential threats to Spirit’s continuing mission, this threat was terrestrial in origin. And it came from inside NASA Headquarters."

And for those of you that are interested in the simulants, I believe they are the following simulants produced by the Space Resources Program. Lunar Mare: Lunar Highlands: Mars:

Also check out the cohesion on the lunar mare simulant. (The highlands simulant is in the small capusle glued to the lid).

Small jar or lunar mare simulant being tilted approximately 70 degrees without the simulant flowing which demonstrates the coheive properties of the simulant.

Yesterday I graduated with my Master of Science in Space Resources from . At the Space Resources reception, our program chair gave each graduate two jars of simulants, one with lunar mare and lunar highlands simulant and one with Mars simulant.

Two small jars of planetary material simulants set on top of a Colorado School of Mines diploma holder.
Two jars of planetary simulant on a shelf next to a Mars rover toy.

Just finished my Economics of Space Resources final. Which was the final final for my Masters of Science in Space Resources, and it could be my final final ever. (I've said that at least 3 times now, so don't hold me to it).

Submitted my 'leave of absence' requested to my graduate program for the spring. I'm taking the semester to think long and hard about if I want to continue on with the PhD. As my advisor pointed out, a PhD should enable a desired career path. I'm not sure this does for me.

For having ostensibly given up on a dream, I am doing a whole lot of 'Monday morning quaterbacking' today. I just need to keep reminding myself that chasing it just isn't worth it anymore in time, treasure, and heartache.
