This picture (early 60s) of Nina Simone and James Baldwin somehow makes me want to simultaneously cry and punch the air in sheer bloody joy.

In fairness, a couple of them look mildly embarrassed to be posing with such brazen hypocrisy.

That said, how many times do you get Orson Welles and Wendy Craig on the same screen...?

Watching 1967’s I’ll Never Forget Whatsisname on some old film channel (as my mum told me it was shot where my grandparents lived). It’s vile. Misogyny to make your eyes water, acting so wooden it needs creosote. It was Michael Winner’s take on Swinging London, and god it shows.

In point 7 should be “pint or 2” not “pint of 2”

For those that asked, my chilli marmalade recipe. It’s bloody marvellous, even if I do say so myself.

Sure no-one’s following me for cookery tips, but I’ve just done another batch of Seville orange marmalade with chillis today, because the first one was so good, and it is an absolute life changer. 4lb 🍅 2🌶 1 ♥️

Found my 10 year old self's scrapbook from a 1977 trip around Europe in the back of a Citroen van, with my mum in the front trying to be a lesbian. It was all breathlessly exciting for a suburban Midland kid. Europa! Today seemed like an appropriate day to share it. 1/10

(Just to explain: after her mid 70s dabble, Mum found a boyfriend not long after. She left France in 2017 to live back in Brexit Blighty. She is our EU membership personified...)

I Feel Love was the sound of the future, and the perfect soundtrack to that brilliant summer. Life would never be the same again. Merci, danke Europe. Au revoir, auf widersehen. 10/10

We ate peaches from Nelly's garden, lots of nougat (a local delicacy) and had a day out to the Med. It was bliss, but I was worried about being able to pick up the Top 20 show on Long Wave that Sunday evening. Phew! I did. Donna Summer was still number 1, with I Feel Love. 9/10

We thundered through Switzerland, stopping to visit the Rhine Falls, and back into France, for the final stop, at Nelly's near Valence, in the Drôme départment. 8/10

My sister and I had to share the windowless back of the van with Mum's girlfriend's collection of spanners and wrenches. It wasn't comfortable, but we didn't care. Next stop Edith's, in what looks to be one of Germany's dullest villages. No matter! We were having a ball. 7/10

(I can't explain the obsession with chewing gum. There are pages of gum wrappers in my scrapbook, plus all sorts of other food detritus. I was like a Womble with OCD.) 6/10

I'd never been to Germany before, and loved it. First stop was staying with Ursula and her dog Puce, in Freiburg. The city is famous for its staggering gothic cathedral, and although I remember it, my chosen image of Freiburg for the scrapbook was a little more prosaic. 5/10

This trip was different. Mum had a girlfriend, and she had a van. Off we all rattled on a whistlestop tour of European women. I was totally hooked on Orangina, and scared that there would be no more after Strasbourg. 4/10

A far lovelier map: the 1977 Paris métro. It was my morning job to get the croissants, and sometimes I'd ride the métro from the nearest station (Péreire, ligne 3) to try a boulangerie elsewhere. Proof too that the 70s could make even the world's most chic city look dowdy. 3/10

Mum had moved to Paris in 1972, as we were about to join the EEC. Though it meant I only saw her twice a year, I was so proud of being European, with a foot in two countries. First up, the excitement of the flight - not obvious from my write-up. Of course, I did a map too. 2/10
