Today, Troy McAlister was arraigned on numerous felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated charges for the deaths of Hanako Abe and Elizabeth Platt. My office and I are distraught over this horrific tragedy.

Yesterday, I had a nearly 90-minute heart-wrenching meeting with Ms. Abe's mother, a woman of great strength and kindness. I am meeting with Ms. Platt's family later this week. My office and our Victim Services team are committed to supporting both families.

Although of course no one predicted this tragedy, it is true that my office, and other justice partners, could have done things differently, which might have avoided this terrible outcome.

Respectfully, if news reports are accurate the accused had a strong pattern of thefts and burglaries including car jacking. This wasn’t a one off or unpredictable occurrence. Every theft or burglary can go wrong and puts innocent people at risk.

With that said, I do not envy the position you hold, or the gravity of that position and the very difficult decisions you have to make. And I applaud your efforts to find new and better solutions.

As you continue your efforts on reform, I would simply ask to heed the advice of both police and the community. A big first step imho is helping build trust between the two and holding both accountable (not solely demonizing the police as many do under the guise of “trust”).

At the end of the day, as you well know, it’s not the activists, the politicians, or deep money - but the police and the community who will be impacted by your decisions, for better or worse. I thank you for your service and for owning the responsibility that comes with it.
