@milend @mikeash look, that’s the entire point of the thing. you can turn it off.

@millenomi @milend I thought the entire point of the thing was to protect important system binaries.

    3. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

@mikeash @milend the point of the thing is to prevent software to do damage to the system where a user gave their admin password.

    4. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

@mikeash @milend this includes attaching to processes.

      0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
    5. mikeash ‏@mikeash 8 Dec 2015

@millenomi @milend So why can I attach to all the non-Apple processes I want?

      0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
    6. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

@mikeash @milend that sounds like a fine bug to file.

      0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
    7. mikeash ‏@mikeash 8 Dec 2015

@millenomi @milend Really? It's clear that this is intentional.

    8. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

      @mikeash @milend how so?

      0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
    9. mikeash ‏@mikeash 8 Dec 2015

@millenomi @milend It consistently allows attaching to non-Apple apps and no Apple apps, you don't do that by accident.

@mikeash @milend I spelled out the precise intent of SIP in my previous tweet. If you think it is partial, it’s worth a radar.

      mikeash ‏@mikeash 8 Dec 2015

@millenomi @milend How does preventing debuggers attaching to unimportant processes match that intent?

        1. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

@mikeash @milend it doesn’t. My point is: do you think this should be extended because it’s inconsistent?

          0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
        2. mikeash ‏@mikeash 8 Dec 2015

@millenomi @milend No, I think it should be dialed back so it does its job and nothing more.

        3. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

@mikeash @milend its job is preventing a user that didn’t give its informed consent the ability to touch what shipped with the OS.

@millenomi @milend You said the point was to prevent software from doing damage to the system. How does this help?

          0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
        6. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

@mikeash @milend currently, SIP does not apply any ‘importance’ rating to anything; it merely protects, again, what shipped with the OS.

@millenomi @milend What "damage" could be done by attaching a debugger to user-owned processes?

        9. ✾ w ‏@millenomi 8 Dec 2015

@mikeash @milend for one? if you can execute code in the context of a process you can use their Keychain ACL.

        11. mikeash ‏@mikeash 8 Dec 2015

@millenomi @milend OK, so the goal is not just to prevent damage to the system? I'm getting some severely mixed messages here.
