Turns out that the App Store is just another DRM scheme with all the nonsense and dysfunction that implies. Who'd'a thunk it.

@mikeash @siegel You're surprised it has DRM? That's certainly not new to anyone who realizes that they have to enter an Apple ID & password

@mcelhearn @siegel No. Please try reading it again.

@mikeash @mcelhearn Right. The issue is not DRM per se, we all always knew that. MAS is not magical DRM that “just works” all the time.

@siegel @mcelhearn The issue is Apple sycophants who think that when Apple does something fundamentally broken, it'll be magically better.

@mikeash @siegel @mcelhearn depends on the definition of better - better than no DRM? Nope. But better than most DRMs? Possible.

@dmunsie @siegel @mcelhearn None of my "Enter a license code to unlock" apps have ever spontaneously stopped working.

@mikeash @siegel @mcelhearn yes, that’s why I said possible and not yes. Apple has a lot to work on here.

@dmunsie @siegel @mcelhearn What's weird is that this surely comes from doing too much work, not too little.

@mikeash Checking with Apple servers on install / update / first run would have been fine, not every run.

@mikeash I think it is designed that way. Sad but true.
