But a job is first & foremost an exchange of economic value. I provide value (e.g. good work), they provide commensurate value (e.g. raise).

Great point that "family" promises security in exchange for loyalty - but there's no security these days, so your loyalty is wasted.

I don't think the burden of resistance belongs wholly on employees though. I'd love it if everyone had time/energy to make their own stuff.

I think those of us with some level of power also bear responsibility to tell the companies to fucking cut it out. IP agreements for one.
